National Call to Action:
Mother's Day in May was a delicious event. Five DOP volunteers spent two days delivering apple pies to the offices of Congressman Paul Hodes, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, Senator John Sununu and Senator Judd Gregg. The message was "sweet," PEACE wants a piece of the pie, the budget pie that is! The DOP was asking for 1% of the total discretionary budget to fund the cabinet level position that would work both domestically and internationally on issues of violence and conflict resolution. The pies were gratefully received in every office and long conversations were enjoyed with numerous office staff. Each conversation ended in a request for the representative to support the current bill H.R. 808.
DOP volunteers from Minnesota, Deb Gibbons and Florida, Ed Helm, Deb Vest, Dennis Harrison and Patricia Plantamura first arrive to help spread the word in this important primary state and to attend the Democratic Convention and Democracy Fest.
Presentation at the Hollis Brookline Rotary Club
Invited to join the Memorial Day Service at the Cathedral of the Pines honoring our fallen service men and women. Conversations were enjoyed with Congressman Paul Hodes and other members of the armed service.

The New Hampshire Delegation for a US Department of Peace was in Washington, D.C. for the Feb. 3-5 National Department of Peace Conference, where over 1,000 attendees met, networked, shared experiences and listened to several noted speakers, among them Deepak Chopra, James O'Dea, Marianne Williamson and others.
The delegates were presented with workshops on Purpose, Plan and Actions to promote Peace Building. Statistics on Violence were presented including a recent World Health Organization report that estimated the cost of interpersonal violence in the US, excluding war related costs, is $300 billion a year.
On Monday, February 5th, the delegates were briefed on how to lobby their congressional leaders. There were over 220 meetings scheduled with senators and representatives. The NH Delegation, including two students from the Milford High School Peace Jam Club, met with Senator Sununu, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter and Legislative Aides to Senator Gregg. Congressman Hodes, unavailable on February 5th had met with the delegates in Concord prior to the conference.
Most exciting of all, the Bill to create a US Department of Peace was reintroduced into the 110th Congress on February 5th as well. The Bill, H.R.808, is calling for a cabinet-level Department of Peace and Non-Violence which will augment our nation's problem solving options, providing practical, non-violent solutions to the problems of domestic and international conflict. This Department of Peace will research, articulate and facilitate nonviolent solutions and work to support our military with complimentary approaches to peace-building.
The NH Department of Peace Campaign believes that creating a culture of peace for our country and for the world is of utmost importance. Future conflicts are likely to arise and it is possible to reduce or avoid violence as a means of addressing conflict if we focus on treating violence at its root cause. This campaign supports open, constructive nonpartisan dialogue that leads, through example, to creating a culture of peace and nonviolence.
