Late in June, on a hot summer day, the NH Department of Peace team joined thousands of other citizens at a
unifying rally for the Democratic Party in the tiny community of Unity, NH.
As we waited in line along the village green surrounded by its white clapboard houses, we were approached by an Obama campaign representative and invited to sit in the bleachers behind Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama.
(Following a brief discussion on the appropriateness of appearing, in this fashion, at a 'partisan' gathering, we concluded that we would as easily don our bright green shirts in the future and attend a McCain event.)
We accepted and were led with the others past the long slow moving line, through a specially designated security screening, around the press area and behind the podium to the bleachers.
There, we hoped we might catch the attention and the imaginations of the press and onlookers. (Being in our terribly bright green shirts, we were placed off to the side of the candidate. I noted in the papers that most sitting in the photographic line were dressed in red, white and blue for a patriotic common color theme.)
Nonetheless we had a multitude of opportunities to share and educate about the possibility of a Department of Peace and Nonviolence. It was a healthy sign to be chosen to represent the notion of unity by the campaign.
Barbara Thorngren gave a fine, walking interview with a radio reporter from Boston beyond that, our sharing was at a personal level.
We had plenty of time while awaiting the busses (and the pending thunderstorm) to make some new friends and contacts.
