Northeast Regional Department of Peace Conference

March 28-30, 2008 - Exeter, RI

The Second Northeast Regional Department of Peace Conference was held March 28-30, 2008, at The Canonicus Retreat Center in Exeter, RI. Attendees came from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey to share their ideas and experiences in the movement to create a cabinet level Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

With our Peace Dove float, "Grace" in tow, the NH DoP team arrived early to set Grace up as the official greeter. There were many photo ops with Grace throughout the weekend.

Second Northeast Regional Department of Peace Conference Friday evening's keynote speaker, Dot Maver, President and CEO of Peace Partnership International spoke on "Being the Change and the Global Peace Movement." Saturday was filled with workshops ranging from Intro to DoP legislation and Campaign for Newcomers, Unraveling the Patriarchy for Peace, It Takes a Village: Bringing Veterans Home to Nonviolent Communication and Restorative Justice & Prison Practices.

One third of the 85 attendees were students, many of which are part of the Student Peace Alliance. These young people brought an abundant amount of energy and ideas to share. One student commented on how exciting it was for her to be among like-minded adults who listened to what the students had to say.

During the 3-day conference, attendees were treated to the wonderful music of Peace Troubadour, Cecilia St. King.

Participants left refreshed, renewed and reinvigorated for the many tasks that await us in our campaign to establish a United States Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

The New Hampshire Campaign Celebrates the International Day of Peace

The New Hampshire campaign celebrated the International Day of Peace with three presentations of the play, The Gift of Peace. (Those of us who attended the 2007 conference in DC were treated to the performance of the Gift of Peace by the original, nation traversing troop.) Ours was directed by an enthusiastic NH peace and responsible spending activist, Christine Frydenborg, who works with local, talented youth. They perform under the name of Best Foot Forward Productions. The original play, written by Stacey Martino, draws from a series of monologues which express ruminations about the need for the development of a Department of Peace and Nonviolence. Its points of view arise from a variety of everyday American citizens...

Presidential Candidates in NH

As a primary state, NH is fertile ground for first-hand rubbings with the candidates. The candidates may show up at the local café, a house party or at an all out political rally. There is seldom a day when a Presidential hopeful is not active somewhere in our state. As a matter of fact there are websites offering this information along with morning reports of locations and times on NH Public Radio...

National Call to Action:

Mother's Day in May was a delicious event. Five DOP volunteers spent two days delivering apple pies to the offices of Congressman Paul Hodes, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, Senator John Sununu and Senator Judd Gregg. The message was "sweet," PEACE wants a piece of the pie, the budget pie that is! The DOP was asking for 1% of the total discretionary budget to fund the cabinet level position that would work both domestically and internationally on issues of violence and conflict resolution. The pies were gratefully received in every office and long conversations were enjoyed with numerous office staff. Each conversation ended in a request for the representative to support the current bill H.R. 808.

The New Hampshire Delegation for a US Department of Peace was in Washington, D.C. for the Feb. 3-5 National Department of Peace Conference, where over 1,000 attendees met, networked, shared experiences and listened to several noted speakers, among them Deepak Chopra, James O'Dea, Marianne Williamson and others.

The delegates were presented with workshops on Purpose, Plan and Actions to promote Peace Building. Statistics on Violence were presented including a recent World Health Organization report that estimated the cost of interpersonal violence in the US, excluding war related costs, is $300 billion a year.

Congressman Hodes, unavailable on February 5th had met with the delegates in Concord prior to the conference.

Most exciting of all, the Bill to create a US Department of Peace was reintroduced into the 110th Congress on February 5th as well. The Bill, H.R.808, is calling for a cabinet-level Department of Peace and Non-Violence which will augment our nation's problem solving options, providing practical, non-violent solutions to the problems of domestic and international conflict. This Department of Peace will research, articulate and facilitate nonviolent solutions and work to support our military with complimentary approaches to peace-building.

The NH Department of Peace Campaign believes that creating a culture of peace for our country and for the world is of utmost importance. Future conflicts are likely to arise and it is possible to reduce or avoid violence as a means of addressing conflict if we focus on treating violence at its root cause. This campaign supports open, constructive nonpartisan dialogue that leads, through example, to creating a culture of peace and nonviolence.
